Ruger SP101, the “Perfect Revolver” for Texas LTC Proficiency Test

SP101-4 Ruger SP101, the latest addition to my rental gun collections. Although most students will opt to shoot their semi-autos, for those wishes to qualify with a revolver, I consider this is the “perfect revolver” for the Texas LTC Proficiency test. Here are the reasons:

  • Ruger SP101 is a heavy-duty 357-magnum revolver, which means when one shoots 38 Special in this relatively heavy revolver, it will significantly tame the recoil.
  • The Texas DPS LTC Proficiency Test is all in 5-shot strings. The SP101 is a 5-shot revolver. It will be much easier for beginner shooters to keep the gun loaded and running between strings.
  • I purpose select the 3” barrel on this SP101 so the students will able to obtain a longer sight radius and weight when compare of the more popular 2.25” barrel.
